‘She was born on a summer Sunday in 1914. It was an unusually warm summer. In his garden at Giverny, Monet was painting waterlilies. The Tzar was at his summer palace. Elgar was composing.
It was an age of horses and carts, domestic servants, airships and silent movies. Just eleven years after the first powered flight.
We were a Superpower with an Empire on which the sun never set but houses had no power and were lit with gas and oil lamps. Women could not vote. There was no NHS. The life expectancy for men was forty-seven…’
With the above words, my uncle began his tribute to his mother, my grandmother, on the occasion of her funeral in January 2011.
My grandma died on 21 December 2010 at the age of 96½ years old.
Today would have been her 100th birthday.
To celebrate, here are 100 photos of a much-loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who we all still miss.
Today, Twitter celebrated its 8th birthday by giving people the ability to find their first tweet.
